The Center Mission

Planning and design are vital elements in the growth and development of successful neighborhoods, districts, towns, cities and regions.

In the Region 2020 visioning process, citizens set forth a clear vision for enhancing and preserving the distinct and varied physical characters of Central Alabama.

They said: "We must collectively and collaboratively work together to build a 'better place to live:' a region that nurtures people, encourages prosperity and captures the deep sense of placed we all value."

This vision includes Region 2020 goals and strategies that imply physical design and planning and collective engagement.

The partners envision the Center for Regional Planning and Design as a crucible for this work, as a regional "town hall," and as a Center for exploration, testing, and fostering informed consensus among the many partners who will shape the ongoing realization of our future.

The mission statement for the Center:

"A partnership to enhance capacity and development in the region through planning, design and citizen engagement."

Auburn Center for Architecture and Urban Studies; Region 2020; Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham

"Building prosperity through good planning and design."
