Housing Enterprise of Central Alabama:

HECA opened in April 2003 as an institution formed to support the development of moderately priced housing in Central Alabama. Jointly, HECA and its non-profit affiliate, the Housing Fund of Central Alabama, provide loans and gap financing to qualified private and non-profit developers to build and renovate safe, decent housing for low- and moderate-income families. HECA offers flexible financing for the construction and rehabilitation of affordable, for-sale single-family homes and rental properties. HECA operates in 12 counties and has an initial funding capability of nearly $64 million. HECA grew out of an affordable housing initiative launched in 2002 by Region 2020.

For more information, contact HECA at 323-9888.

Southern Organizing Cooperative:

A Southern Regional Network of 330 community-based economic and social justice organizations committed to eradicating poverty and injustice through community organizing, and impacting local, state and regional policy.

For more information, contact Southern Organizing Cooperative at 715-4480.

Initiative 7:

The Regional Economic Development Initiative of the Seventh Congressional District of Alabama was created at the urging of U.S. Rep. Artur Davis to stimulate comprehensive community economic development in Alabama’s poorest congressional district.

Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham:

A non-profit that funds, supports, nurtures and promotes arts and cultural organizations and working artists in a 12-county region in Central Alabama. The Cultural Alliance’s formation was a major recommendation of the arts and culture master plan, which was released in 2003 by Region 2020 and The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

For more information, contact the Cultural Alliance at 264-8452.

Metropolitan Planning Organization:

The Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is responsible for comprehensive transportation planning in Jefferson and Shelby counties. Members of the MPO include local and state government officials as well as representatives from the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Each urbanized area is required to have a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) designated by agreement among the Governor and local governments.

The MPO is responsible for a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning process that results in plans and programs that consider all transportation modes and support metropolitan community development and social goals. The voting membership of the MPO primarily includes local elected officials, the transit operator and appropriate state officials. This committee is supported by a Transportation Technical Committee. The MPO is further supported by a Transportation Citizens Committee. Staff provided by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham supports these committees.

For more information, contact the MPO at 251-8139, or go to the website, www.bhammpo.org.

Cawaco Resource Conservation & Development Council:

The council leads Central Alabama in the conservation and wise use of resources. Cawaco’s name originates from the Cahaba, Warrior and Coosa Rivers, the principal natural assets of the five county service area: Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby and Walker Counties.

For more information, contact Cawaco at 251-8139, or go to the website, www.cawaco.org.

Scenic Alabama:

The organization’s mission is to protect and enhance the appearance and scenic character of Alabama's communities and roadways. Many times natural, cultural, and scenic assets are jeopardized or lost because of encroaching development. Scenic Alabama strives to implement design and development controls to protect the unique aspects of the State.
