In the Region 2020 visioning process, citizens viewed the scenic beauty of the region as one of its greatest strengths, and one that should be preserved.
A major element of planning for growth is protecting a community’s open spaces and greenways. In coming months, Region 2020 will work with the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham to develop an Open Space and Greenways Plan that links the region’s parks, forests and natural assets.
This plan will address transportation, health and recreation goals. It will also be the basis for an economic development strategy to promote the ecological diversity and recreational opportunities of our region’s streams, rivers, forests and mountains. Elected officials in the region increasingly view Eco-Tourism as an important economic development strategy for their communities.
