From the Executive Director
The Cultural Alliance . . . Fueling Inspiration Throughout the Region
“One should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see
a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may
not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in
the human soul.” Goethe
The twelve-county region surrounding Birmingham is rich with talented
artists and outstanding arts and cultural organizations. From inspiring
classical music to breath-taking dance to thought-provoking sculpture
and the natural beauty of botanical gardens, the fabric of our community
is enhanced by the quality, strength and diversity of the arts and
culture. The benefits of a vibrant cultural community are numerous—an
improved quality of life, opportunities for cultural tourism, enhanced
educational programs, an environment where diversity is valued and
celebrated, a positive impact on the local economy—and, of course,
the intrinsic benefits to individuals’ well-being from exposure
to art and culture.
The Cultural Alliance is the umbrella organization in this region
whose mission is to provide support to the arts and cultural community.
The Alliance acts as the primary spokesperson and advocate on behalf
of the cultural community, provides technical support to organizations
and artists, raises awareness, funds operating budgets, special projects
and initiatives, and individual artists, facilitates collaborations
and develops arts and cultural education programs. In short, donors
wishing to have impact on the overall artistic and cultural environment
can do so through the Cultural Alliance. With a professional staff,
extensive granting guidelines, peer review panels and intensive evaluation
of potential grantees, the Cultural Alliance can ensure that donors’ generous
gifts are used efficiently and wisely, and have maximum impact on the
cultural community.
The Cultural Alliance also has oversight of the Cultural Master Plan
implementation. The Master Plan, a comprehensive document addressing
resources and needs throughout the cultural community in the region,
was funded by the community, developed with input of more than 600
community members and released to the public in March 2003. The plan
outlined specific priorities, goals, and strategies for enhancement
of the area's cultural life. The Alliance funds specific initiatives
designed to meet the plan’s objectives and action steps. By ensuring
the Master Plan is fully implemented, the Alliance will propel arts
and culture in our region forward as never before. Gifts to the Cultural
Alliance support the implementation of the Master Plan and, in turn,
strengthen the entire cultural community and improve the quality of
life in our region. By giving to the Cultural Alliance, donors help
to “create the sense of beauty . . . implanted in the human soul.”
